Finally a promotion from the "greedy" bookmaker Pinnacle Sports. They are not well-known for handing out bonuses or promotions of any sorts, but this time they are offering a fun challenge for the crowd, which I think will be fun for those of you who follow esports.
The task at hand is simple: enter a number between 0 and 100. Those who gets their number closest to two thirds of the average is the winning number. So if the average is 45, then 2/3 of that is 30.What makes this game interesting is that you have to account for not only what you think the other participants will choose as their number, but what they think you will choose, and what you think they will think you think and so on.
I played this game in one of my behavioural finance courses a while back, and was surprised by the result we got. As you gleen from this, you know that the number cannot be higher than 66,6 (and probably a lot lower than that as well).
If we assume that the others think that 50 will be the average number, than they will pick 33. If most anticipate that others will think the same, they will think the average will end up at 33, so they will pick 22. This goes on and on untill we end up at 0. But 0 cannot be the correct answer either.
So which is it? Not easy to guess. In my class, we ended up at 13, which included som funny choices like 75, 0, 66 and so on.
