The 2016 World Championship is just around the corner and the best Lol teams in the world have been doing their best to make their way into the competition. While the first two seeds were previously determined by the accumulation of Circuit/Championship points and winning the Summer Split, the last chance for teams to make it into the Championship was the Regionals.
The NA LCD Regionals took place a couple of days ago, with Team Liquid, Team Envy, Immortals and Cloud9 doing their best to secure a place in the Worlds 2016. Despite being the highest seeded team and the only ones to only have to play a single match, Immortals failed to qualify, losing 3 – 1 against Cloud9 in the third round of the Regionals.
Moving into round 2, Team Envy were set to meet Cloud9, an experienced Lol crew who have been around since 2012 and have already had significant results, having played the Worlds in each of the previous 3 editions. Cloud9 made easy work of the new and upcoming Team Envy in a 3 – 0 victory that was to be expected.
The Regionals finals took place on September 5th, with Cloud9 facing off against the top seeded Immortals. Another new team on the block, Immortals crushed the Summer Split, only coming behind TSM by one win, doing quite a bit better than Cloud9. This was all not enough to qualify for the Worlds, as Cloud9 stepped up and took a 3 – 1 victory, making their way into this year’s Worlds and leaving Immortals short of a spot on the big stage.
The final victory of Cloud9 comes as a bit of a surprise if we consider the regular season, but it is likely that the experience Cloud9 players have as a team and the momentum they built up from defeating Team Envy a day before may have played a big part in their win. Be as it may, Cloud9 will be representing NA in this year’s Worlds.
This year’s NA LCS Regionals winners will be joining TSM and Counter Logic Gaming to represent the American interest in the Worlds while stiff international competition is expected in what should prove to be an extremely entertaining tournament.
