London Spitfire vs Florida Mayhem
After a highly successful first day of the Overwatch League, we're off to the second day.
First up, we have a highly anticipated showdown between the London Spitfire and Florida Mayhem. Anticipated mostly in order to fairly judge and evaluate just how strong London is at the moment. While it might not be fair to fully dismiss Florida Mayhem, it is with good reason.
This match would have been that much more hype had Florida actually played up to expectations during the preseason. Since that failed to be the case, we're left to wonder how strong they actually are. They're surely motivated to represent both Florida and Europe as well (as it's an all EU roster that was highly regarded during their Misfits days) but they're pitted against a team that is predicted to occupy the very top of the standings.
The last we've seen from London was a dominant 4-0 showing against the San Francisco Shock when they completely shut down any and all hope that Shock fans might have had. It was a complete shellacking and they displayed mechanical superiority on almost all fronts. It was the former Cloud9 KongDoo lineup that did all the work, as the second part of their roster failed to show anything worth mentioning in their previous match against the Los Angeles Gladiators. It was a weird sight to behold as the former GC Busan squad took APEX Premier 4 by storm just two months prior. The meta shifted a bit and they went to uncharted territory - from Korea to Los Angeles. With some time this roster will surely start playing at their former level, but for this match it's expected for the KongDoo squad to start as they displayed a better understanding of the meta and better overall synergy.
Florida has the tools to make this somewhat competitive however. They had ample time to prepare and study footage on both London squads, and perhaps they have something up their sleeves. They also have the smallest roster out of all OWL teams that are competing meaning they can all gel faster and they don't have to split scrim time. Also with staple names like TviQ, Logix and Manneten to lead the charge, it's almost impossible not to take at least a single map.
Expect this match to go in London's favor without a doubt. They're more in-sync, they have some of the best players in the world. That said, many fans are hoping that Florida goes into overdrive and performs up to their expected level.
